Wetang’ula’s family thrown into mourning as his brother James Mukhwana dies
By Luke Oluoch, December 10, 2025The family of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has been thrown into mourning following the death of their brother, Mwalimu James Mukhwana Wetang’ula.
Mukhwana’s demise has been confirmed by his brother and Westland Member of Parliament, Tim Wanyonyi, through his Facebook page on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.
Wanyonyi hailed his brother a courageous warrior and mentor.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of my elder brother, Mwalimu James Mukhwana Wetang’ula,” Tim’s statement read in part.

“As a family, it is painful and deeply unsettling, but we remain grateful to God for the gift of his life. As it is written in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” hee added.
Mukhwana, a renowned educationist and disciplinarian, was the eldest son of the senior Dominic Wetang’ula and a brother to Tim and Moses.
Tributes to James
Among those who have mourned the deceased include Trade and Investment PS Juma Mukhwana.
Mukhwana expressed his shock at learning about the sudden demise of his namesake, whom he credited for mentoring many people in the community.
“It is with sadness that I have learned of the passing on of my teacher and neighbor James Mukhwana Wetangula. You were a strong pillar in our community, having mentored many people. Go well, my brother. It shall be well with you,” Mukhwana tribute said.
The deceased has also been tributed by aspiring governor and Bungoma politician Zachariah Barasa.
The DAP-K politician decried the demise of Mukhwana as a huge loss to the community while conveying his condolences to the Wetang’ulas.

“To lose a man of such quiet brilliance, gentle dignity, and unwavering moral fiber is devastating in itself — but for this tragedy to strike mere months after the family bid farewell to their beloved mother renders the grief almost unbearably profound. My thoughts and prayers embrace Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, Speaker of the National Assembly, and Hon. Timothy Wetang’ula, MP for Westlands, as they endure yet another shattering blow to their hearts.
Mwalimu James embodied a rare grace — a noble soul whose wisdom, humility, and steadfast compassion illuminated every life he touched. His legacy is not merely remembered; it is felt — in the minds he shaped, the hearts he uplifted, and the values he quietly championed.
