Wetang’ula slams activism for derailing govt initiatives
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has decried the increased activist movement in the country, citing its role in derailing government initiatives.
Wetang’ula made the remarks to a horde of Kenyan students in Algeria’s capital, Algiers, while accompanying a Kenyan delegation led by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki in the 4th Intra-African Trade Fair on Friday, September 5, 2025.
The speaker urged the youthful populace to keep the fine conduct that has so far been reported of them.
Derailing government programs
“I encourage you to work hard and be good ambassadors and citizens. When you come back, bring the discipline you have in this country back to Kenya.
“In Kenya we have too many haki zetu that have derailed part of our programs because everybody must have their way. It is a good thing, and as humans, we must be ready to sacrifice a few of our comforts for the better of society,” he noted.
Kindiki also praised the students’ conduct while encouraging them to be on the lookout and exploit the government’s plans aimed at supporting young people to make sound career choices.
Proud of you
The DP also cautioned the students against engaging in violent and reckless behaviour that borders on anarchy, stressing that the government remains committed to lending an ear to Kenyans.
“We are proud of you; we have not had any bad incidents, and that means you are keeping yourselves together and focusing on what brought you here,” he said.
“When you get work, the path to come back home remains open. We are trying to support young people through various reforms targeting your age group for better career outcomes,” he stated. At the forum, the two leaders also addressed Kenyans living in the North African nation.

The two are part of Kenya’s delegation that will represent President William Ruto in the trade fair.
The 4th Intra-African Trade Fair seeks to enhance awareness of the AfCFTA’s transformative potential for Africa’s economic future.
In addition, part of the discussions at the fair is expected to help come up with clear and practical recommendations to accelerate regional economic integration.
The high-level continental trade fair will also bring together heads of state, business leaders, and policymakers to deepen Africa’s economic integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
