National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has announced plans to construct an ultra-modern media centre within Parliament Square.
In a statement shared on his X account on July 17, 2024, Wetang’ula stated that the move was expected to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of parliamentary reporting.
According to the speaker, the initiative will be spearheaded by the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) which is under Wetang’ula’s stewardship. It will provide parliamentary reporters with the necessary tools and environment to effectively fulfil their duties.
“The PSC through my stewardship has committed to establishing an ultra-modern media centre within the Parliament Square to help facilitate parliamentary reporters to effectively deliver their mandate.”
“The media is an integral stakeholder in facilitating effective delivery of parliamentary work and in informing the public while ensuring national values of transparency and accountability are achieved,” Wetang’ula stated.
Further, Wetang’ula highlighted the critical role of the media in upholding the principles enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya 2010. Wetang’ula added that the Constitution highlights the importance of the media in promoting transparency, accountability, and public participation in governance.
Wetangula further added that a variety of stakeholders were involved to ensure that the cordial relationship between the parliament and the media industry operated smoothly through the dissemination of important information to the public.
“The Constitution of Kenya 2010 through articles 34, 35 and 118 cements the role of the media, and cognizant to this fact, the Parliamentary Service Commission has this morning engaged representatives from the Media Council of Kenya (MCK), the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) and the Kenya Parliamentary Journalists Association (KPJA) to review the current situation in the institution and re-assure the Media of a continued cordial partnership in ensuring that factual and timely information is relayed to the public,”
In addition to creating the media centre, Wetang’ula assured the media industry that existing media legislation would be reviewed by the PSC to make sure they were in line with current trends and technological advancements.
The Media is an integral stakeholder in facilitating effective delivery of Parliamentary work and in informing the public while ensuring National values on transparency and accountability are achieved.
