Wetang’ula reveals details of his meeting with EU Election Mission

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has revealed the details of his meeting with the European Union Election Follow-up Mission.
Wetang’ula, in a statement shared via his official social media accounts on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, said that he had hosted the delegation led by its head, Ivan Stefaner, in his office at Parliament Buildings.
The former Bungoma Senator says the meeting sought to review the progress made in enhancing democracy, particularly in the electoral processes, to encourage active participation of special interest groups such as youth and women.
“Hosted a delegation of the European Union Election Follow-up Mission led by its head, Mr. Ivan Stefaner, in my office at Parliament Buildings. The meeting sought to review the progress made in enhancing democracy, particularly in the electoral processes to encourage active participation of special interest groups such as youth and women,” Wetang’ula stated.
During the meeting, Wetang’ula informed the EU team of the advances made by the country in strengthening the political participation of women and youth.
He cited the need for political parties to review their policies and ensure they give support to the vulnerable groups and enable them to contribute to the management and running of affairs in the country.

Wetang’ula further urged lawmakers under the affirmative action seats to utilize the opportunity to profile themselves amongst the electorate and seek elective seats in future elections so that women seeking to rise to positions of power can utilize the opportunity.
He also encouraged the European Union and its partners to offer more support to the new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) that will be formed once the hiring process is complete.
“With the push for a more progressive and effective electoral body amidst the ongoing reconstitution of the polls body, IEBC, I encouraged the European Union and its partners to offer more support to the new Commission to ensure they are able to effectively carry out their duties and uphold democracy, acknowledging the fact that elections in Kenya are emotive with participants yet to acknowledge the winner and loser outcome, spiraling division in the country,” Wetang’ula stated.

Moreover, the Ford Kenya party leader encouraged Kenya and the EU to adopt parliamentary diplomacy to improve its foreign policy.
This, Wetang’ula says, will help improve the country’s global influence in advancing an agenda that is key to improving the livelihoods of its people.
