“As a nation, we must strengthen disaster preparedness in our institutions and ensure such a tragedy is never witnessed again,” she stated.

The governor spoke as the country continued mourning students who lost their lives in the dormitory fire that also left several others injured.

“I have learnt with deep sorrow of the fire tragedy at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, which has led to the loss of young lives and left several students injured,” Wavinya said.

She extended condolences to the affected families and wished quick recovery to students currently receiving treatment following the incident.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wish a quick recovery to those receiving treatment,” she added.

Calls for improved school safety

Wavinya also urged institutions across the country to prioritise safety measures and preparedness systems to reduce risks during emergencies.

She described the incident as a painful national tragedy that had shaken families, schools and communities across the country.

“May the departed souls rest in eternal peace,” the governor stated.

Her remarks come as leaders continue raising concerns over school safety standards following the tragic fire incident at the Nakuru-based institution.

Government reviewing safety compliance

The comments also come amid ongoing investigations into the cause of the fire that broke out at a dormitory within the school.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has urged the public to avoid speculation as authorities continue investigations into the tragedy.

Ogamba said the government already has a school safety manual in place and noted that investigations would establish whether the institution complied with the required guidelines.

The CS further revealed that the Ministry of Education has continued conducting safety audits in schools following previous incidents linked to non-compliance with safety standards.

Authorities have since launched investigations into the fire as emergency teams continue supporting affected students and families.
