Wamuchomba slams Wamatangi over surging cases of newborn deaths in Kiambu
Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has criticised Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi for failing to address the increasing number of newborn deaths in county hospitals.
In a fiery statement on her X page on Friday, October 3, 2025, Wamuchomba slammed the governor for failing to take decisive action to curb the deadly trend.
‘The excruciating pain of losing babies at birth in Kiambu County hospitals is now at its peak. The inability to sort out the hospital mess in Kiambu just confirms that we have an inept county chief. Governor Wamatangi seems to care less,” she stated.

Wamuchomba shared a damning finding that indicated a surge in the reported cases of mortality across the county’s referral hospital and Level 5 hospitals.
She further fingered the governor for blaming the health situation on a political witch hunt.
‘Without sympathy, these confirmed figures of the many dead under his watch, he now terms it political smearing. In simplicity, losing 165 babies and 5 mothers in your hospitals is just political smearing? This is the highest contempt of life from any human being elected as the steward of the people. Wamatangi has failed Kiambu County,” she added.

Her remarks come moments after KPMDU regional Secretary of Central Kenya, Bill Muriuki, revealed the extent to which the ongoing doctors’ crisis had affected healthcare in Kiambu County.

Muriuki explained that the interns, who had been posted to the various health facilities in the county by the Ministry of Health, posed a significant health threat.
“You would rather go to a hospital and find it closed rather than have incompetent personnel and lose a life. Health is a very critical matter; you might have a good cover, but when you are being treated by someone who just finished his studies last year, it is a concern. That is a great crime,” he stated.
Kiambu’s tough stance
His remarks come as the county dismissed reports that a doctors’ strike has paralysed health services in the region.
The County Government, through its Chief Officer for Health, Patrick Nyagah, on Friday, October 3, 2025, maintained that all hospitals in Kiambu are operational and continue to serve residents despite ongoing disputes with the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU).
“The first misconception is that doctors in Kiambu aren’t working, as has been drawn by the union in the public arena. I want to say that doctors in Kiambu are working.
“The question is, how many doctors are on duty? Not all doctors are working, but a sizable proportion are working. All our hospitals are operational,” he said.
