Githuguri Member of Parliament (MP) Gathoni Wamuchomba has rejected the proposed salary hike by the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

In a statement on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, Wamuchomba said the proposed salary hike for state officials and legislators amid crisis is insensitive and ill-advised.

The MP further said that any talks about the salaries of government officials and legislators should be about reduction and not hiking.

"The salary increase proposal by SRC for MPs and Senators is insensitive and ill-advised. The discussion should be to cut not add," she said.

Wamuchomba on govt structures

She says that it is time to review the structures of the government adding that she welcomes the deduction of salaries for all state officers and public workers.

"I reject any increment and welcome deduction of salaries for all state and public workers like myself. It’s time to review government structures," she stated.

Salary hike

Effective July 1, 2024, government officers, members of parliament and cabinet secretaries will receive salary increments according to SRC.

The Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi's salary increased to Ksh990,000 per month while the National Assembly Speaker’s salary increased to Ksh1.2 million per month. MPs and senators' pay increased to Ksh739,600.

A governor's pay has been adjusted to a scale of Ksh990,000 and the MCAs will take home Ksh164,588.

However, the proposed salary rise has faced a backlash from a section of the legislature who have rejected the increase.
