Wamuchomba decries water crisis in Githunguri’s special schools

By , January 10, 2026

Githunguri Member of Parliament (MP) Gathoni Wamuchomba has raised an alarm over a prolonged water crisis in her constituency, accusing Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company and the Kiambu County Government of neglecting residents and public institutions, including a special school for learners with disabilities.

In her Saturday, January 10, 2026, statement, Wamuchomba has lamented that Kambui School for blind and deaf children is the only one among 68 schools in Githunguri without water, following the disconnection of supply over a legacy debt of Ksh215 million owed by the Kiambu County Government since 2014.

Githunguri’s dry taps

”How unfair can this be? Why punish learners with disabilities this way? Kambui School for blind and deaf kids has no water supply, among all the 68 schools in Githunguri.

“This is blatant sabotage from Nairobi Water Services, who disconnected water for a legacy debt of water bills of Ks215M accrued since 2014, owed by the Kiambu County Government,” the legislator took to X.

According to Wamuchomba, the water supply to towns and villages in Githunguri was cut off on Friday, October 31, 2025, plunging thousands of residents into hardship and raising public health concerns.

She faulted the county government for what she described as silence and inaction despite repeated appeals. Wamuchomba further questioned why Githunguri continues to suffer water shortages, yet it hosts the Ruiru Dam, which has supplied water to Nairobi since 1950.

”Githunguri is the home of Ruiru Dam since 1950, which supplies water to Nairobi water services, yet that water is NEVER taken in Githunguri, not even a drop. The neighbouring villages of Ngochi, Kahunira and Ruiru Dam don’t even have tap water! We have been relying on Sasumuwa and Kariminu water supplies, which Nairobi Water Services has since disconnected,” she added.

The lawmaker noted that neighbouring villages such as Ngochi, Kahunira and areas around the Ruiru Dam lack tap water, forcing residents to rely on water from Sasumua and Kariminu dams, supplies that she says have also been disconnected by Nairobi Water.

Water supply irony

The MP has expressed anger that water from Kariminu Dam was cut off despite the community allowing Nairobi to draw water from Ruiru Dam for more than seven decades.

“They have the audacity to disconnect our water supply from Kariminu Dam, yet we have allowed them to draw our Ruiru Dam water since 1950,” she said.

Wamuchomba has also revealed that she held meetings with officials in a bid to have the water reconnected but failed to secure any commitment.
“Yesterday, I tried to convince them to reconnect it to no avail. I held meetings in futility,” she stated.

She warns that continued lack of water could force schools to shut down and expose residents to disease outbreaks. “So do we close down our schools, or are you waiting for cholera outbreaks?” she asked.

The legislator also criticises what she termed a selective response by authorities, suggesting that only dramatic public protests seem to trigger action. “Seems you only respond to dramatised communication,” she said.

Gathoni Wamuchomba has called for urgent intervention to restore the water supply to Githunguri and protect vulnerable groups, particularly learners with disabilities, from further suffering.
