Wamatangi says Thika closer to city status after MCAs approve report
By Kenneth Mwenda, June 20, 2025Thika town is now one step closer to becoming the sixth city in Kenya, and the first in the Central region, after Kiambu MCAs unanimously backed its elevation. Governor Kimani Wamatangi shared the news as he led the push for Thika to become a smart, industrial city.
“Thika’s bid for city status got a boost as MCAs unanimously approved a report supporting its elevation to an industrial smart city. The report now heads to the Senate for consideration,” Wamatangi posted on X on Friday, June 20, 2025.
The report was first handed to the County Assembly by Governor Wamatangi. It had been prepared by an ad hoc committee chaired by former Senator Sylvia Kasanga. The committee carried out public participation and included key findings showing Thika’s readiness to become a city.
If the Senate approves the report, it will be sent to President William Ruto, who can then officially grant Thika a City Charter.

Jobs, investment, growth ahead
Thika’s new status would create more than 50,000 jobs through growth in manufacturing and technology. It’s location gives it a great chance to grow and ease pressure from Nairobi.
MCAs highlighted Thika’s strong financial base. The town already brings in good revenue from land rates, business permits, transport fees, and more. Thika also meets the population mark of 250,000 required by the Urban Areas and Cities Act.
The town has good roads, water, power, schools, health centres, and public spaces. It also manages waste collection and recycling, and plans are underway to improve solid waste disposal.
Becoming a city will not only elevate Thika but also bring wider development across the whole county. With the report now headed to the Senate, residents are hopeful that Thika’s long journey to city status is finally nearing the finish line.
