Wamae questions economic value of Talanta Stadium that is set to be named after Raila Odinga
Former Roots Party presidential running mate Justina Wamae has ignited debate by questioning the economic benefits of the under-construction Talanta Stadium, which is set to be renamed the Raila Amolo Odinga International Stadium.
In a post on X dated December 14, 2025, Wamae argued that while the facility may boost national pride, it does little to address the financial struggles of ordinary Kenyans.
“The only thing the Talanta Stadium will do for Kenya is boost our national pride. Our pockets will remain as empty as a Kenyan elected politician’s address. Sasa pride na kusota… haziambatani!”
The 60,000-seat stadium along Ngong Road is over 68 percent complete as of December 2025, with construction expected to finish in the first half of 2026. It is scheduled to make its international debut when Kenya co-hosts the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
Initiated under President William Ruto’s administration through the Talanta Hela initiative, the project aims to nurture youth sporting talent while positioning Kenya as a continental sports powerhouse. Officials have cited potential benefits such as job creation during construction, revenue from hosted events, and increased tourism.

Renaming in honour of Raila
The renaming announcement was made on December 12, 2025, during the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo National Stadium.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja proposed honouring the late opposition leader Raila Odinga, who passed away on October 15, 2025, while receiving medical treatment in India.
Sakaja suggested that the venue host next year’s Jamhuri Day and bear Odinga’s name in recognition of his lifelong service to the nation.
President Ruto welcomed the proposal, noting that he had received calls from across the political spectrum. He confirmed that the stadium would be renamed Raila Amolo Odinga International Stadium upon completion. Similar suggestions had earlier been made by leaders including Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei and Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) hailed the renaming as a fitting tribute to Odinga’s legacy in democracy, justice, and national unity. Leaders such as Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Kisumu Governor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o described the gesture as transcending partisan politics.
Wamae’s post underscores ongoing public discourse on the prioritisation of infrastructure amid economic challenges.
