Waiguru mourns Kirinyaga’s founding deputy governor Njiri
By Kenneth Mwenda, September 2, 2025Kirinyaga County is mourning the loss of Julius Muthike Njiri, the first Deputy Governor of the devolved unit.
In a heartfelt tribute, Governor Anne Waiguru, who revealed the news via her X account on September 2, 2025, described Njiri as a man of service, knowledge, and enterprise.
“Kirinyaga has lost one of its founding county leaders, Hon Julius Muthike Njiri, who served as our first Deputy Governor,” she stated.
“He stood for service, knowledge, and enterprise. My condolences to his family, colleagues, and the people whose lives he touched.” Her message was shared on social media platforms, reflecting the deep sense of loss felt across the county.
Njiri was a pioneering leader who played a crucial role in the establishment and development of the county following the 2013 devolution. His tenure as Deputy Governor was marked by his commitment to public service and his active involvement in various community development initiatives.
He was known for his efforts to improve infrastructure, education, and healthcare services within Kirinyaga. His leadership was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the county’s growth and prosperity.

Impact
Beyond his official duties, Njiri was deeply embedded in the fabric of Kirinyaga’s communities. He was a familiar figure at local events, schools, and public gatherings, where he engaged with residents and listened to their concerns.
In 2016, Njiri publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with the treatment he received from then-Governor Joseph Ndathi, particularly regarding the allocation of county allowances.
He claimed that his fuel and transport allowances had been withheld, and he did not have an official car, contrary to constitutional provisions. This led to tensions between the two leaders, with Njiri stating he would not work with Ndathi again, citing mistreatment.
Despite these challenges, Njiri remained dedicated to his role and continued to serve the people of Kirinyaga with integrity and passion.
