Wadadi, Zetech seeking improved fortunes in FKF Women Premier League
Wadadia Ladies and Zetech Sparks have had similar misfortunes lately in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women Premier League and have both declared that there is no room for complacency moving forward.
Coincidentally, the two teams conceded that they did not reach their first leg targets in the season, and have vowed to turn around their campaign in the second leg.
The duo had planned to finish in the top five places by the end of the first leg but dropped points at the weekend in their final matches of the first leg.
While Wadadia finished seventh at 14 points, Zetech were ninth with ten points after 11 rounds of matches.
“The first leg did not go as planned. We expected to be amongst the top four but midway through the season our performance dropped. All the same, we have some time to re-strategize in the second stanza and correct where we went wrong,” Wadadia coach Hassani Maloba said. On his part, Zetech Sparks tactician Benard Kitolo said shaky goalkeeping was their main undoing and noted that it put paid top their chances of being among the top four teams.
Kitolo nonetheless promised to turn round their fortunes in the second leg.
“My plan was to help the team finish in the top five places but then there were frailties in goalkeeping and as we are speaking I have rectified that. I believe we will be a different preposition in the second leg,” Kitolo said.
He said he will maintain the bulk of players in the current squad and only add a few green horns in his quest to mould a formidable squad.
“I’m not going to drop any player because I believe in development. All my players are below 22 years apart from experienced Yvonne Khavere and Puren Alukwe who are 25 years old,” Kitolo said.
He lauded his midfield department as the best in the league so far but cautioned the players not to be carried away by the advantage.
“The midfield was our strongest department and to me, it is the best in the KWPL. It created a lot of chances and I must single out the likes of Mercy Njeri, the Under-20 international, Lydia Akoth, and Yvonne Khavere for giving their all. In football, that is where a match is mostly won,” Kitolo remarked.
