Vocational training institute opens in Ruiru

There is new hope for school leavers following the opening of a new 1,000-capacity vocational training centre in Ruiru, Kiambu County.

The 57-million Ruiru Technical and Vocational Training College in Gatong’ora ward which opened its doors on last Friday is the first such public institution in the populous constituency and offers various skills.

During the handing over of the facility to the Ruiru community by the contractor, at least 100 new students enrolled for lessons, which are set to begin later this month.

The Kabete National Polytechnic will initially run the centre before it is taken over by a local management board, according to area MP Simon King’ara.

The institution whose construction began in 2019 was built on seven acres out of the 10 surrendered by the community for the purpose, with the then NG-CDF fund injecting Sh10 million and the rest being sourced from the exchequer.

King’ara, accompanied by area Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Margaret Mbugua and the contractor Aloise Kinyanjui, asked school leavers to take advantage of the new facility and enrol in various vocational courses including mechanics, welding, electronics, plumbing, masonry and computer courses among others.

“Our youth who leave secondary school or drop out for one reason or another now have a chance to advance themselves by acquiring the necessary skills which shall enable them to get jobs or become self employed,” said King’ara.
