Vihiga Queens can dare dream after three wins in a row

By , January 6, 2022

Vihiga Queens head coach Boniface Nyamunyamu believes he has a formidable side capable of winning this season’s Football Kenya Federation Women Premier League (FKF-WPL) title.

Vihiga relinquished their title last year after winning it three times in a row (2017, 2018, and 2019) and coach Nyamunyamu feels that going by how they have started the new season, he’s confident of maintaining the tempo, adding that, winning the opening three matches gives the team good morale to perform even better.

“By collecting maximum points in all our three season opening matches, it makes us strong and ready to work even harder, and there is no room for mistakes. Our ambition is to win the WPL and I’m confident we will win it again this time,” Nyamunyamu told People Sports.

On Tuesday, the Legacy Makers as the team is fondly known in football circles, defeated Trans Nzoia Falcons 3-0 at Mumias Sports Complex to become the only team in the league with a 100 per cent record after three matches.

Live-wire Jentrix Shikangwa scored a brace with Christine Nafula scoring the other goal.

Winning run

Elsewhere, newcomers Bunyore Starlets continued with their winning run on the bounce after beating Nakuru City Queens 2-1 at Mumboha Stadium to make it two wins out of two on the bounce after losing their opening match.

Susan Malda was the match heroine, scoring both goals for Bunyore while Melon Mulindi gave City a consolation goal through a penalty in the dying minutes of the game.

“As Bunyore Starlets, we are now approaching each game as a final. The two wins have now given us a morale boost after we started the season with a loss against Wadadia. Now our focus for this season is to remain in the top league and avoid relegation.

All teams are tough in this campaign you can’t predict any results before a match.

We are now focused on Ulinzi Starlets game on Saturday at Ruaraka,” Bunyore Starlets team manager Zacharia Amakhang’a told People Sports.

On the other hand, Kisumu All-Starlets who had started the season wrongly, going down 6-0 to Gaspo Women in week one, and 6-2 to Zetech Sparks in week two, bounced back emphatically in week three on Tuesday by overpowering Kangemi Starlets 6-0.

Lydia Ruth Awuor was outstanding grabbing a hat trick in the match with impressive Monica Etot scoring a brace and Jecinter Nyambok scoring the other goal.

“We had a bad pre-season, some of our players were mourning their loved ones but we are bouncing back slowly,” Kisumu All-Starlets team manager Beryl Monique Oketch told People Sports.

In the final match played on Tuesday, Ruth Nabwire inspired Kayole Starlets to a 1-0 win over Zetech Sparks at Ruaraka Sports Club.

This was the first win Kayole recorded this season, having lost their opening two matches.
