Former Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has called for an urgent explanation, accountability, and a thorough review of safety standards in Kenyan boarding schools following the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy that reportedly claimed the lives of 16 students, leaving 79 others with injuries.

In a statement issued after the tragedy on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Matiang’i expressed deep sorrow and heartbreak over the devastating incident, describing the deaths of the learners as a painful national loss.

“Deeply saddened and heartbroken by the tragic fire incident at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil that has reportedly claimed the lives of 16 innocent children,” he said.

The former CS extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the school community, and all Kenyans mourning the loss of the young learners.

“No parent should ever have to receive such painful news about a child sent to school in pursuit of education and a better future,” Matiang’i stated.

Matiang’i on recurring fire incidents

The former CS further raised concern over what he termed as recurring safety failures in boarding schools across the country, referencing the deadly Hillside Endarasha Academy tragedy, where 21 pupils lost their lives in a dormitory fire.

According to Matiang’i, Kenyans are still waiting for clear answers regarding the circumstances surrounding previous school fire disasters, making the latest tragedy even more disturbing.

“As a nation, we must urgently confront the growing questions surrounding the safety and well-being of our children in boarding schools,” Matiang’i said.

Matiang’i has further called the relevant inspectorate departments, quality assurance agencies, and all responsible authorities to provide a transparent explanation regarding the safety standards, preparedness measures, and living conditions in schools.

“I hope the relevant inspectorate, quality assurance bodies, and all responsible authorities will provide a full, transparent, and honest explanation regarding the safety standards, preparedness, and conditions under which our children are living and learning,” he added.

Matiang’i stressed that the lives of school-going children cannot continue to be treated casually and called for immediate accountability from those responsible for enforcing school safety regulations.

“The lives of our children cannot be treated casually, and accountability can no longer be postponed,” he said.

He concluded by praying for the souls of the departed students and asking God to grant strength and comfort to the affected families during what he described as a dark and painful moment for the country.

The tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy has once again reignited national debate over the safety of boarding schools, emergency preparedness, and the enforcement of fire safety regulations in learning institutions across the country.
