Used condoms, liquor and call that pinned Obado and company in Sharon Otieno’s murder
By Zipporah Ngwatu, July 23, 2026The judgement of the murder of the deceased second-year Rongo University student Sharon Otieno has revealed items recovered from the scene of crime.
According to the judgement, the court noted that the prosecution witness (PW) 18, Mary Mugire, in her testimony to the court, said that she had recovered two used condoms from the scene of crime.
The witness stated that there were also sachets of unused condoms at the scene where Sharon was found dead.
Notably, the judgement revealed that the officer also recovered some illicit liquor at the scene and a pair of flat shoes belonging to the former Migori governor Okoth Obado’s ex-lover.
Before meeting her death, the evidence adduced in court states that on September 3, 2018, Sharon received a call at around 5 pm from the former county chief aide Oyamo telling her he had her message from Obado.
Sharon then called XYZ a protected witness and informed him that Oyamo had asked for a meeting to convey Obado’s message to her.
“According to the evidence produced in court PW9 averred that Sharon called him on September 3, 2018 informing him that the second accused (Oyamo), had conveyed a request from the first accused (Obado), and that they should meet,” the judge stated.
The court heard that the journalist and Sharon agreed with Oyamo’s request, and on arrival at their meeting point, they had agreed that she contacted Oyamo, who redirected him to Rongo Town.
The two proceeded to Rongo and went to Gracia Hotel, where they waited for the PA, who eventually joined them in the hotel.
However, Oyamo informed them that the place was too open for him to communicate the message he had from Obado and requested that they move to another location.
It is XYZ testimony that as they exited the hotel, they found a dark vehicle parked outside the hotel entrance, which Oyamo allegedly asked them to board, claiming that it belongs to him.
“On boarding the vehicle, I noted that it already had two occupants, a driver and a passenger seated on the passenger’s seat,” the journalist told the court.
However, XYZ, Sharon and Oyamo boarded the vehicle with Sharon sitting in the middle, and the vehicle left the hotel.
When they left the hotel, the vehicle was driven towards Rongo town but subsequently changed direction along the way, near a petrol station where the journalist claimed to have seen two people standing by the roadside.
Around 7.30 pm, the journalist recalled that Oyamo ordered the driver to slow down, and when he did, he (Oyamo) exited the vehicle.
Upon Oyamo’s exit, two unknown men entered the vehicle, making the unknown men Sharona and XYZ four. When the two unknown men entered, they sat at the rear seat and saluted him and the deceased.
The journalist told the court that he was able to see the two men seated with them at the rear seat, but he was unable to see the driver and the two seated on the front passenger’s seat, who appeared to be receiving instructions from somewhere, as he was constantly on the phone.
XYZ narrated that as they proceeded with the journey, one of the men ordered them to switch off their mobile phones and surrender them together with their other valuables, which they did.
Notably, the same man who he was not able to identify asked him whether he had a tape recorder, and the other man started searching his pockets.
Meanwhile, according to the journalist, the man sitting next to Sharon asked her about her relationship with him and how she regulates the government, which Sharon explained.
The man sitting next to him (journalist) also asked him how he had met Sharon and why he was doing a story about the governor.
According to XYZ, at that moment, Sharon got distressed and started crying, and one of the men told her to stop crying as they were taking her to the governor.
The journalist informed the court that as the conversation continued, the man sitting next to him became violent and started strangling him, asking him why he was following the story about the governor.
The court heard that the said man then put his feet in an inclined position, and XYZ took advantage of this development, rewired his way from distress, opened the door lock of the vehicle, and jumped out of it while it was still in transit.
The journalist fell on the tarmac, noting that he saw the vehicle stop at some point and two people started running towards him, but he eventually escaped.
