US govt thanks Ruto for declining to sign Finance Bill 2024

The US government has thanked President William Ruto for declining to make the controversial Finance Bill into Law.

According to the US Spokesperson Matthew Miller, the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke to Ruto on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, to thank him for taking steps to reduce tensions caused by the controversial bill and pledging to engage in dialogue with the protestors and civil society. 

The Secretary further welcomed Ruto's commitment to abide by Kenya's constitution which allows peaceful demonstrations.

"Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke with Kenyan President William Ruto today. The Secretary thanked President Ruto for taking steps to reduce tensions and pledging to engage in dialogue with the protestors and civil society," Matthew Miller's message reads.

"The Secretary welcomed President Ruto’s commitment to Kenyans’ constitutionally-endowed rights, including peaceful assembly and due process for those detained."

Blinken urged the anti-riot police to refrain from using violence on unarmed protesters adding that the government should contact investigations of the alleged human rights abuses during the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests.

"The Secretary underscored the importance of security forces demonstrating restraint and refraining from violence and encouraged prompt investigations into allegations of human rights abuses," Matthew Miller said.

Blinken emphasised the commitment of the US to partnering with the Kenyan government to address the country's economic challenges.

"The Secretary reiterated the partnership of the United States with Kenya’s government and people as they work to address their economic challenges," Matthew Miller disclosed.

Finance Bill 2024

Kenyans will not adopt the controversial Finance Bill 2024 after Ruto, declined to sign the bill into law on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, after it was presented to him following its passage through the National Assembly.

While addressing the nation, Ruto disclosed that the proposed Bill targeted revenue collection of Ksh346 billion had been reduced to Ksh200 billion after undergoing public participation.

"I will decline to assent to the bill, Consequently, having reflected on the continuing conversation around the content of the Finance Bill 2024," Ruto said.
