University of Nairobi to set up school of Artificial Intelligence

The University of Nairobi (UoN) is taking significant steps to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) and prepare its students for the future.
The UoN plans to establish an Artificial Intelligence School as part of its strategic move towards developing a proficient workforce for the future.
It will be called the Nairobi School of Artificial intelligence (AI).
But it is not just the AI school that UON plans to set up. It will also unveil new ‘Big 5’ major projects to transform the university education system.
This AI initiative aims to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in the evolving technological landscape.
According to the Chancellor, Prof Patrick Verkooijen (pictured), the AI institute will enable researchers to better understand how AI works.
The Chancellor emphasised that the institution has ample resources to offer AI programme’s in collaboration with overseas bilateral partners.
The AI school will play a crucial role in fostering innovation, research, and practical applications of AI, UON said in press statement yesterday.
“We will offer masters classes in AI, once we roll out the programme,’’ said Verkoojen, hoping that this minimises technological risks.
Verkooijen said they will develop top-tier AI talent and create localised AI solutions for Africa, including East Africa’s first AI master’s degree.
