Fury as unga prices remain unchanged in Kiambu
Days after President William Ruto announced that prices for unga would go down to cushion struggling Kenyans, it, today, April 18, emerged that the prices remained constant for most of the brands.
A spot-check by People Daily Digital at various supermarkets and retail shops in Kiambu County established that Ruto’s decree was yet to be implemented as shoppers continued to purchase the commodities at high prices.
At Naivas supermarket in Thika town, for example, a 2-kilo bag of Ndovu maize flour on Tuesday afternoon cost Ksh189, Jogoo was going for Ksh208, Ajab cost Ksh199 while Pembe was retailing at Ksh208.
Others are Soko at Ksh207, Hostess Ksh231, Dola Ksh199, Taifa, Ksh198, Mama Ksh198 and Raha Premium Kavagara Ksh262.

The prices were, however, higher by two or three shillings at the village shops with most shoppers expressing fury over the unchanged prices despite the president’s announcement.
Most shoppers told the government to stop playing politics with crucial issues affecting Kenyans such as the high cost of living.
“Inflation is still very high and the common man is feeling every bit of its pinch. We want our leaders to act swiftly and heed to their campaign promises by lowering the cost of living to affordable standards,” John Kamau, a furious shopper said.
“It is sad that we are still stuck and struggling with low purchasing power. Why the government has decided to exercise double speech is not a matter we should take lightly.
“A president is a man whose stature demands that he says the truth and only that which is possible otherwise promising us heaven and offering nothing to get us there is unfortunate,” James Mungai, another shopper in Thika said.
The shoppers expressed fury even as others took to social media sites, stating that the prices mentioned online were wholesale prices for low-demand brands that are not mostly consumed by Kenyans.
