6 nabbed using undergarments, human hair to brew chang’aa in Ruiru

Police in Ruiru, Kiambu County, on Friday evening, seized and destroyed over 2,600 litres of illicit brew being manufactured along Kamiti River.
Led by the Ruiru Sub-County police commander Alex Shikondi, the security team made impromptu raids to various illicit brew dens along the river at the border of Ruiru and Kasarani constituencies where they netted hundreds of litres of illicit brew commonly known as Kangara used in making chang`aa.
The brewers are reported to have been using dirty items such as used undergarments, menstrual products identified as Always, and human hair among others to make the outlawed liquor which they have been hawking in Ruiru town and Githura areas.
“This place is very dirty and the items used to make Chang’aa are harmful to the consumers,” Shikondi said.
During the raid, six people were arrested and are expected to help police further their investigations in the intensified fight against illicit brews.
They will also face charges of manufacturing outlawed substances against Kenyan law.
Shikondi said that residents have been negatively affected by illicit brewing vowing that the crackdown will continue to ensure that the war on illicit brew is won.
He appealed to the public to give information on any person dealing with illegal drugs in the sub-county.
The police boss at the same time urged the locals to embrace alternative sources of livelihood as the crackdown against illicit brew is aimed at saving the current generation from extinction, reducing theft cases, school dropout among children, and marriage break ups.
“We are not sleeping and are ready to go for these people wherever they are. We also want to thank locals who have been volunteering information and we pray that we continue with such cooperation,” Shikondi added.
