UN Secretary-General Guterres arrives for Nairobi Africa Forward Summit

By , May 11, 2026

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has arrived in Nairobi ahead of the inaugural Africa Forward Summit 2026, which has brought together African leaders, global officials, and investors for talks on development, innovation, and economic cooperation.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale received Guterres at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and described the gathering as a major diplomatic moment for Kenya.

In a statement shared on X on Monday, May 11, 2026, Duale said the summit marked the beginning of a “historic diplomatic gathering” in Nairobi.

“Secretary-General Guterres is among the high-profile arrivals for the inaugural Africa Forward Summit 2026,” Duale said.

The summit is taking place in Nairobi between May 11 and May 12 and is co-hosted by President William Ruto and French President Emmanuel Macron.

According to the Kenyan government, more than 30 African heads of state and government are expected to attend the event alongside business leaders, policymakers and development partners from different parts of the world.

Duale also confirmed that Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam had arrived in Kenya for the two-day forum.

“The Africa Forward Summit is positioned as a platform to strengthen Euro-African collaboration on climate action, technology transfer and youth empowerment,” Duale stated.

Historic summit for Nairobi

The Nairobi summit is significant because it is the first time the Africa-France summit format has been hosted in an English-speaking African country.

The forum, officially known as Africa Forward: Africa-France Partnerships for Innovation and Growth, has traditionally taken place either in France or in French-speaking African nations since its launch in 1973.

Kenya’s hosting of the summit reflects Nairobi’s growing diplomatic role in continental and global discussions, especially on climate finance, innovation, and reforms to international financial systems.

Macron arrived in Kenya on Sunday before the official opening of the summit. He said France wanted a renewed relationship with African countries based on partnership rather than influence.

The French president acknowledged changing political dynamics in Africa after France completed its military withdrawal from several West African countries last year.

Focus on investment and innovation

Government officials said the summit would focus on investment, technology, climate action, energy transition, and youth opportunities.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi earlier said the summit would bring together more than 4,000 delegates.

“The summit will bring together over 4,000 delegates, including 30 African Heads of State and government, to unlock partnerships in innovation, investment and growth,” Mudavadi said last week.

Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei said discussions would centre on seven key areas. They include green industrialisation, artificial intelligence, digital technology, sustainable agriculture, health systems, peace and security, and reform of the international financial system.

Officials also expect business meetings and bilateral talks on the sidelines of the summit.

On Sunday, Kenya and France signed 11 agreements covering sectors such as transport, agriculture, and energy.

The agreements came as leaders sought to strengthen economic ties between Kenya, France, and other African countries attending the summit.

Among the leaders in Nairobi is Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, who is attending as part of a regional diplomatic tour.

The summit is expected to end on Tuesday with the adoption of the Nairobi Declaration at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.
