The United Kingdom Embassy in Nairobi has condemned acts of violence meted out on protestors by the police.

Demonstrators who were protesting against the murder of Albert Ojwang were faced with a forceful reaction from the police, and the UK has now registered their displeasure over how the law enforcers reacted.

The embassy has also demanded an open and fair investigation into the actions of the police officers.

“Police forces must command the trust & confidence of those they are duty-bound to serve & protect. We are deeply disturbed by the violence against unarmed civilians & protestors yesterday. We urge a swift, independent, and transparent investigation into the actions of the police.

“We send our best wishes for the swift recovery of those injured during yesterday’s violence,” the UK Embassy said in a statement on X on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

During the protests, a police officer was captured shooting a mask vendor, and that generated a lot of criticism from leaders and members of the public.

Consequently, the National Police Service confirmed the arrest of the police officer involved in the shooting incident.

Police reaction

“The National Police Service has noted with great concern an incident involving the shooting of an unarmed civilian by a police officer using an anti-riot shotgun within the Nairobi CBD. The said police officer has since been arrested,” NPS said.

“The Service takes great exception and does not condone such unlawful groupings. Such individuals will be handled firmly, according to the law. Consequently, investigations have commenced to identify and deal with the criminals accordingly,” the statement added.
