Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has arrived in Nigeria for the the 2024 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) Democracy Dialogue.

Uhuru landed in the West African country's Benin City on Wednesday, June 12, 2024.

"His Excellency President (Rtd) Uhuru Kenyatta has arrived in Benin City, Nigeria, for the 2024 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) Democracy Dialogue," Uhuru's office announced in a statement via official X account.

The event, which is the third in the series, will be held in Edo State's capital and is organized by GJF founder and former Nigerian President  Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

According to Uhuru's office, the event will be co-hosted by Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki.

"The event, which is the third in the series, will be held in Edo State's capital and is organized by GJF founder and former Nigerian President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. Co-hosting the dialogue is Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki," the statement reads.

The 2024 dialogue is themed  "Functional Education and Effective Political Leadership as a Panacea to Africa's Growth and Development".

Event's objective

The event aims to bring together key political leaders, policymakers, and experts from across the continent.

The discussions will focus on the crucial role of education and the recruitment of effective political leaders in achieving the development goals of African nations.

Other leaders attending

Former Liberian president George Weah, and Nevers Mumba, ex vice-president of Zambia, are some of the notable leaders that are also attending the 2024 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation democracy dialogue.

Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto, and Njoya Tikum, head of the UNDP sub-regional hub for West and Central Africa, will also attend the event.

The event will kick of tomorrow (June 13, 2024), in Benin,  Edo state.

Together, the leaders will scrutinize the pivotal role of education and political leadership in realizing the developmental aspirations of African nations.

The keynote address will be delivered by  Olubayi Olubayi, chief academic officer at Maarifa Education, a Kenya-based Pan-African company.

This year’s dialogue follows the 2023 edition, which explored the nexus between democracy and development with the theme ‘Breaking New Grounds in the Democracy-Development Nexus in Africa’.
