President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has intensified grassroots mobilisation in former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s Nyanza backyard ahead of the 2027 election.

The party at the weekend focused on consolidating its support base in the traditionally opposition-leaning region with a series of political activities at the ward levels.

According to Homa Bay County UDA chairman Ken Obuya, these initiatives are aimed at engaging directly with the electorate.

Several public forums were held in various wards, by UDA officials to recruit new members.

“Our aim is to build a robust grassroots support for President Ruto in Nyanza beginning at the ward level, so that he is felt more in the villages, than ever before,’’ said Obuya.

Historically, the region has resisted the government, with many voters viewing ruling parties as out of touch with their needs. The locals have largely rejected the status quo, especially in the aftermath of the post-election violence of 2007 and subsequent political developments.

“Our events offer voters a chance to engage with the party on a personal level, ask questions, and voice their concerns, which allows UDA to fine-tune its message and better connect with the electorate,’’ explained Obuya.

Alego Usonga MP Sam Atandi on Saturday defended Ruto and urged the community to support him.

“Ruto is not fought because he is bad. The hidden reality is that Ruto is being fought because he is doing things that people have not done and people did not think should be done. One of them is to place a Luo at the heart of economic governance of Kenya,” MP Atandi said.

Unlike before, UDA is able to operate in a less hostile environment, with more leaders embracing its ideals
