Two in Catholic priest murder case to take plea next Monday

Two suspects linked to murder of Machakos Catholic priest will spend four more nights in police custody before taking plea at the Embu law courts on Monday.
Milimani Senior Resident Magistrate Paul Mayova ordered Kavivya Mwangangi and Michael Muthini Mutunga to appear at Embu High court to face murder charges. The orders were issued following a request by the investigating officers where they sought one more day to detain the duo to allow them complete probe in Embu where the crime happened.
“We seek one more day to allow the investigating officer travel to Embu to complete investigations and also consult with the Embu DCI officers before charging the two suspects,” said prosecution.
Before the extension of the detention, Muthini had already spent 10 days in police custody while Mwangangi has spent eight days in police custody.
On October 25, Mwangangi, a cook in a Mbeere restaurant known as Kwa Kanyiri sought to confess in an open court how they conspired to murder the cleric.
His confession was cut short by presiding magistrate Hellen Okwani who directed that he confesses at the police station in the presence of his family and a chief inspector. The priest disappeared from his parents’ Tala home on October 5 and his body recovered on October 16 from a riverbed in Mbeere South, Embu.
