TVETs urged to plant trees in their compounds
By KNA, March 4, 2023Principal Secretary of State Department for Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) Dr. Esther Muoria has directed TVET institutions to accelerate tree planting in their schools to actualize the Government’s agenda of attaining 15 billion trees by 2030.
Speaking in Mombasa during the fourth graduation of the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic (KCNP), Muoria hailed the institution for creating a micro-climate in their environment through the aggressive planting of trees.
To mitigate against the adverse effects of climate change, the PS urged Kenyans to plant trees in institutions, homes, and farms. “Planting trees is in line with the Kenya Vision 2030 which aims to provide a clean, secure, and sustainable environment,” said the PS.
Climate change is one of the biggest global challenges; thus its mitigation and adaptation efforts require concerted efforts from all stakeholders. Kenya is experiencing the worst drought ever witnessed in the last four decades, leading to the loss of over 2.5 million heads of livestock and directly affecting more than four million Kenyans.
KCNP has for the longest time been supporting the government in climate change projects through rolling out of solar lighting, beginning with security lighting.
Chief Principal KCNP Mary Muthoka said during the graduation ceremony that they have planted close to 1,000 trees in their small compound and added they will accelerate efforts in the greening programme.
“We have built water harvesting tanks for clean drinking water, with a capacity to collect 280,000 litres,” said Muthoka.
The institution has migrated from using firewood to cooking gas and all new curricula have an inbuilt green element.
