TSC to face senators over tutor hiring

By , December 11, 2023

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is set to face Senators over alleged discrimination and the fate of tutors hired especially those teaching in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) on contract terms.

This even as the Senators sought to have the commission ascertain claims that the teachers are discriminated against during regular replacement, recruitments and employment of permanent and pensionable teachers.

The development comes after thousands of JSS teachers hired on a contract basis threatened to down tools in January next year if the commission does not hire them on permanent and pensionable terms. Instead, the Commission has announced plans to extend their contracts instead of hiring them on permanent and pensionable terms.

Senators are now demanding answers from the Nancy Macharia-led commission on its plans for the tutors.

Led by Nominated Senator Esther Okenyuri (pictured), the lawmakers want the commission to explain whether the teachers were eligible for employment on pension and permanent terms.Okenyuri sought the answers from the Senate Education Committee chaired by Muranga Senator Joe Nyutu, which is set to summon Macharia to explain the concerns. “The committee should explain whether these contract-employed teachers are not eligible for employment by TSC on permanent and pensionable terms,” Okenyuri said.
