TSC celebrates best educators, top institutions

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) yesterday honoured 592 teachers in both primary and secondary schools who, it said, have demonstrated exemplary performance.

Among those awarded during celebration to mark this year’s World Teacher’s Day are chief principals and principals for top secondary schools in last year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.

They include John Kuria (Mang’u High School), Robert Alan (Dr Aggrey High School), Njoka Nelson (Matinyani Secondary School) and Wahome Virginia Wangari (Kenya High School).

Others are Simon Masibo of St Anthony’s Boys High School, Ouma Daniel Onyango of Butula Boys High School, Charles Onyango of Nyambaria High School and Mohammed Hassan Omar of Dertu Girls.

Also feted were head teachers and principals of top public primary schools in last year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination including Paul Karanja of Githunguri Boarding School, Josleen Kirimi Mugambi of PCEA Kathigiri Boarding Primary, Kanga John Mulinge of Masimbani Primary, King’ori Cyrus Mathenya of Utawala Academy and Oginga Hellen Akinyi of Maseno Girls Primary.

Also recognised were the most consistent primary schools nationally in last year’s KCPE examination.

They include Utafiti Day and Boarding in Makueni, St Peter’s Boys Mumias in Kakamega County, Tenwek Boarding, Nandi Hills Primary and St Mathews Septonok both in Nandi County.

Besides Mangu’s Kuria and Kenya High’s Wahome  other Principals awarded for most consistent secondary schools in last year’s KCSE examination included Sammy Maiyo Kipchumba of Kapsabet Boys, David Kamau Chomba of Alliance High School and Makhanu Inviolata of St Brigid’s Kiminini in Trans Nzoia county.

Top private primary schools awarded for their performance included KISC, Kitengela International School and Crystal Academy.

Co-corricular

Top private secondary schools were Strathmore School, Rockfields Senior School and Moi High School Kabarak.

The TSC also recognized top public primary schools nationally which included AIC Kaptich, Masimba Primary, ACK St Luke Primary Bibiriet, Bishop Muge Memorial Primary and AIC Chebirisi Primary.

Top public secondary schools which were feted included Nyambaria High School in Nyamira county, Cardinal Otunga Boys High School in Kisii, Asumbi Girls in Homa Bay, Mangu High School in Kiambu and St Anthony Boys High School in Trans Nzoia.

Also awarded were teachers’ contribution in co-curricular activities including Kenya Music Festivals and games.

During the event held at Kenya School of Government (KSG) yesterday, TSC Secretary Nancy Macharia said the Commission had recognised teachers who had demonstrated exemplary performance in management and delivery of the curriculum and extra-curricular activities.

She said the process had been carried out in adherence with the TSC Performance Recognition, Reward and Sanction Policy Framework.

“The TSC recognizes that a professional and committed service is crucial for improved learning outcomes in Kenya. Our commitment is to continue to work towards transforming and elevating teaching as a profession,” said Macharia.

She added: “As a result, we are today honouring 592 teachers, 200 who are present with us here and the rest across the counties for their outstanding service as outlined in the policy.”

Macharia said the teachers awarded had posted outstanding performance as individuals and teams in academic, co-curricular activities and community service.

“Some have been recognised nationally and internationally. Let us take time to honour and admire all their contribution in elevating the teaching profession,” she said.
