Trio in child trafficking case released on bond

A former Superintendant and two social workers at Mama Lucy Hospital, charged with child trafficking were yesterday freed on bond.

Musa Mohammed, the former superintendent and two social workers -Fred Makallah and Selina Awuor, were released on bond after Milimani Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku ruled that there was no evidence to deny them bail.

“In my view, I find that the prosecution is speculating on claims that the accused persons will interfere with witnesses and documents,” she ruled.

Mohammed who is NMS Medical Services deputy director was to plead to the charges on Monday with the other two, but sent his lawyer who told the court that he was sick and admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital.

Yesterday he was arraigned and he denied committing the offence.

Makallah who faced five counts was released on a cash bail of Sh1 million or a bond of Sh2 million.

Mohammed and Awuor were each released on a cash bail Sh200,000 or a bond of Sh500,000. The court also restrained them from accessing Mama Lucy Hospital.

Mohammed is accused of conspiring with Makallah and Awuor to traffic persons at Mama Lucy Hospital between March 1 and November 16.

They were charged that knowing that Makallah designed to traffic children out of the hospital, they failed to prevent the felony.

Makallah was charged with receiving and transferring a male child aged six years between April 30 and May 13 at the hospital.

He faces two other counts of receiving and transferring two female babies aged two months.

He was allegedly exposed in a BBC investigation negotiating with an undercover journalist, in a plot to sell a child who had been abandoned at the hospital. The case will be mentioned on December 9.
