Trans Nzoia: Protests after a man chases his wife to marry a gay partner
A Trans Nzoia man has sparked off furious protests after chasing his wife with whom they had eight children, to marry a gay partner.
Saturday, gender activists took protests to the streets demanding a police action after it was alleged that the man had battered his wife several times.
Led by Women Rights crusader Immaculate Shamala, the activists accused the police of siding with the suspect.
”We are condemning the assault on Milicent Adhiambo and we demand that she gets justice after her estranged husband chased her out of their home and married a gay from Mombasa,” said Immaculate Shamala.
The villagers said they could do nothing to help the troubled woman since her husband was a well-connected man who can do anything to defeat justice.
The mother of eight children, told People Daily in an interview that she has been chased out of her home by her husband who was since cohabiting with his male partner.
”For the last seven months, I have not been able to sleep in the house after my husband brought another man with whom they have been cohabiting,” she said amid tears.
She said her 20-year marriage has not been rosy and asked for the government’s quick intervention to save her life.
“My attempts to get justice have fallen on deaf ears since my husband who is well connected has never slept in a police cell. This man has beaten me severely using all crude weapons with no action by the police,” she said.
One of her children said the family was undergoing difficulties and asked the government to step in and assist them before things get out of hand.
Efforts by the People Daily to get a comment from Adhiambo’s estranged husband bore no fruit.
Sirende Location Chief Solomon Kariuki said his office had tried all ways to help the woman.
“My office has really tried to assist the woman and her children who are between 9 to 20 in years. We are also trying to make sure the family is provided with food and other basic needs,” he said.
Area County Commissioner Sam Ojwang said it is criminal for anyone to engage in same-sex relationship, warning that the government would be taking tough measures against anyone found doing so.
” We have given the police instructions to crack down on the suspect wherever he is in hiding and this will serve as an example to people behaving in beastly acts”, said the county commissioner.
