Confusion has rocked Akamba Handicraft Industry Cooperative Society in Mombasa County following last minute changes in plans by the government to install free Public WiFi at the Changamwe facility.

According to the society manager, Esther Gakonyo, the management had already initiated preparations ahead of the launch by ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo (pictured)but everything was unexpectedly cancelled at the last minute without any explanation.

“In fact Waziri’s convoy had already entered the compound and he was about to alight when we suddenly heard his security team say the launch was not supposed to be here. Immediately the convoy made a U-turn and drove off,” Gakonyo explained in an interview with Journalists.

The manager recounted a series of events prior to the dramatic change of plan saying earlier, an ICT officer from the County visited her office at the Akamba Handicraft Industry Cooperative Society in Changamwe, on Monday, July 31 where they discussed plans for the installation ahead of the launch.

Later on August 3, she said another team of officers visited her office again and notified her of their assignment to install the WiFi infrastructure assuring her that the wifi will be installed.

To their dismay, the Free Public Wifi would later be launched at the neighbouring Magongo market on the same day.
