Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.

1. Epic battle on Housing Bill

The National Assembly is set for an epic show when the Members of Parliament debate the housing levy deduction when house business resumes today.

The Kenya Kwanza-allied MPs and those of the opposition are set for an epic debate over the Affordable Housing Bill.

After the court declared the levy unconstitutional, the government came up with the bill, seeking to avoid the legal issues surrounding it. Since it remains a controversial national issue, drama is expected when it comes up for debate.

2. Court to rule on private security firms pay

The High Court sitting in Eldoret will deliver a ruling on whether the security firms should comply with the requirement of a legal notice setting the minimum wage for their guards.

The government directed the firms to set the minimum pay for their employees, but in response, they moved to court, seeking conservatory orders to put on hold the implementation of the legal notice.

Eldoret High Court Judge Justice Reuben Nyakundi is set to deliver a ruling, with the firms eager to know whether to implement the new ruling or continue paying their guards at the current rates.

3. Release of pending bills report

The National Treasury and Economic Planning Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u is expected to release the 2024 pending bills verification committee status report.

The CS will conduct the exercise at the National Treasury Building on Tuesday morning alongside Principal Secretary in the docket, Chris Kiptoo, and Edward Ouko, who is the pending bills verification committee chair.

4. KEMRI conference

Meanwhile, Cabinet Secretary for Health Susan Nakhumicha will officially open the 14th Kenya Medical Research Institute‘s annual scientific and health conference, set to take place in a Nairobi hotel.

The conference theme this year is ‘Harnessing Biomedical Research Innovations and Big Data for Health System Resilience, Local Manufacturing, and Commercialization’.

5. Committee meetings

The Senate National Cohesion Committee will meet with the Competition Authority of Kenya regarding the process of the appointment of it’s Director General.

Furthermore, the National Assembly Committee on Lands is expected to meet with the National Land Commission to deliberate on the Land Laws (Amendment) Bill of 2023.
