Here is what you need to know in order to get up to speed with today’s news events.

William Ruto in China

President William Ruto is in China ahead of his participation in the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing. The forum’s primary focus is on fostering cooperation and partnerships among nations in the realm of infrastructure development, with a particular emphasis on the 3rd Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

During his visit, President Ruto is also expected to strengthen bilateral relations between Kenya and China and deliver a keynote address titled “Digital Economy as a New Source of Growth.”

In his speech, he will highlight Kenya’s advancements in the information and communication technology (ICT) and innovation sectors.

Furthermore, President Ruto will engage in bilateral discussions with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, and other world leaders to discuss matters of mutual benefit and cooperation.

Integrity in exams

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) will commence a sensitization forum on October 16, 2023, as organized by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).

This forum is intended for Examination Monitors and Ministry of Education officials for the 2023 examinations, including the Cabinet Secretary, Permanent Secretaries, Council, and Executive Management of KNEC.

The sessions will focus on ethics and integrity in examination administration, with the goal of addressing systemic weaknesses and loopholes that could lead to integrity issues in national examinations.

Court cases

In the legal realm, several court cases are scheduled for mention on Monday. Notably, a case involving former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and others, who have been accused of conflict of interest and conspiracy in the embezzlement of Ksh 24.1 Million from Nairobi County, will be mentioned at Milimani Courts.

The case involving Kapsaret MP, Oscar Sudi, who is charged with forgery and providing false information, will also be mentioned at Milimani Anti-Corruption Court.

Cases involving individuals named Paul Mbatia and Japheth Kimutai are also slated for mention.

Harambee Stars play Russia

On the sports front, the Harambee Stars, the national football team of Kenya, will play their final international friendly match against Russia at the Titanic Sports Complex in Antalya, Turkey.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 7:00 p.m. East African Time. The Harambee Stars are preparing for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, set to begin in November of this year.
