Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today's happenings.

Anti-Finance Bill protests

The planned anti-Finance Bill 2024 in major towns in the country will dominate the headlines throughout the day.

With the bill due for the Third Reading session on Tuesday, members of the public are expected to demonstrate and voice their concerns over the proposed law.

Keen eyes will also watch if the protestors will follow the guidelines issued by the government on Monday, June 24, 2024.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said the government will respect, uphold, promote and fulfil the inalienable constitutional right of every person, peaceably and unarmed, to assemble, to demonstrate, to picket and to present petitions to authorities.

Kinidki said that those demonstrating must adhere to Article 37 right must which provides that the demos must be peaceful and protestors remain unarmed throughout their assembly, demonstration, picket or presentation of the petition(s), not engage in violence or riots, and not provoke, attack or obstruct law enforcement officers or other members of the public among other demands.

The CS also said that non-protesters and those who hold contrary views to the protesters are also bound by the same Constitutional and legal imperatives.

Haiti police deployment

Kenyan police officers are expected to arrive in Haiti to start their peacekeeping mission.

The police who will take part in the mission left the country on Monday after meeting President William Ruto at the Administration Police Training College, Embakasi, for the pre-deployment briefing.

Ruto believes the deployment will restore security in the Caribbean nation.

"Kenya has solid credentials in peace-making and conflict resolution globally. Our police officers' presence in Haiti will give relief to the men, women and children whose lives have been broken by gang violence.

"We will work with the international community to bring lasting stability in Haiti," Ruto said.

This deployment is set to attract more reactions given the opposition it has generated since it was announced.
