Three nabbed with Sh75,000 bhang

Three suspects were arrested in Mororo area after they were found in possession of 353 stones of bhang worth Sh75,000 in the ongoing government’s effort to fight illegal drugs and alcohol abuse in Garissa and its environs.

Bangali Sub-County Police OCPD Karani Ephrain said they are pursuing another suspect who escaped and was said to be the ring leader supplying bhang in Madogo and Garissa towns.

“We have arrested three and pursuing the main suspect at large in the ongoing operation together with Nacada,” said Karani. North Eastern Nacada Regional Manager Rev Wangai Gachoka warned that State will seize building and assets belonging to suspected drug peddlers under the Psychotropic Substance Control Act of 1994.

Elsewhere, A total of 850 boxes of second-generation illicit liquor were confiscated in Matungulu sub-county during a crackdown in Machakos.

The successful exercise was conducted by National Government Administrative Officers in collaboration with county officials. County Commissioner Josephine Ouko said the impounded illicit alcohol included 20 bottles of 250ml in each of the 850 boxes.

“The alcohol was seized in Matungulu market. One can imagine the level the vice has penetrated the community,” she decried.

She said proliferation of illicit liquor was a national security threat and urged the public to volunteer information that will see culprits arrested. Commissioner added that the vice has taken a toll on communities and has contributed to the spread of HIV and increase in crime.

She also warned landlords whose premises are being used to sell illegal second generation liquor.
