Three in tight Senate race to replace Murkomen
By Wycliffe Kipsang, December 8, 2022
The battle to succeed Roads Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen in the Senate is far from over after candidates who lost in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) primaries opted to vie on other party tickets.
Marakwet West MP William Kisang will be UDA flagbearer in the by-election slated for January 5.
He will, however, face-off with entrepreneur and motivational Speaker Tim Kipchumba and human rights activist Jerotich Seii. Duo has alleged that the primaries were not free and fair. Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has cleared Kipchumba to vie on Party for Peace and Democracy while Seii will vie on Safina Party, setting the stage for a bruising battle.
Kipchumba yesterday said he was the best placed to succeed Murkomen owing to his efforts to tame runaway insecurity in the banditry prone Kerio Valley where he comes from.
He has vowed that if elected, he will work with his colleagues to streamline the process of nominations, in the elections Act, to ensure that ‘no other young potential leader will be denied an equal chance to lead this nation’.
Seii also said she was the most qualified for the job due to her experience in championing for the rights of ordinary people through the ‘Linda Katiba’ initiative.
