Tension in Emuhaya after 83-year-old church elder is killed

Tension has gripped Ebuyangu village in Emuhaya sub-county after an 83-year-old church elder was killed by the marauding criminals.

Wellington Atolwa was killed by unknown criminals on the night of the 26th of December 2025, who broke into his house at night.

According to the deceased’s children, led by Judith Atolwa, the criminals slaughtered their father after he failed to yield to their demands.

“My father was slaughtered by criminals who broke into his house at night. They pulled him from his bed and chopped his neck off,” said the sobbing daughter.

Emuhaya MP Omboko Milemba, who rushed to the scene to console with the family, said his people are living in total fear.

Omboko said Emuhaya is experiencing a serious security lapse where people are living at the mercy of criminals.

Omboko decried that in a short span of time three people have been killed by criminals who are still walking free.

“Cases of insecurity here in Ebuyangu have become a serious problem. I was here when a security agent, Zablon Aruka, was killed by criminals. A few months ago, a boda boda man was killed by criminals. We have another incident here in Ebuyangu: Aman has his head chopped off by criminals. I am here again where Mzee Wellington Atolwa has been killed by criminals,” Omboko decried.

Omboko decried that criminals are terrorising residents as police watch.

Insecurity in Emuhaya

Omboko said he has tried to ask security bosses in the government to help him fix insecurity in Emuhaya without success.

He said he asked for more police officers and security patrol vehicles from the Ministry of Internal Security, but his pleas have been ignored.

“I have tried and talked several times to security permanent secretary Raymond Omolo to help by giving us more police officers and police patrol vehicles to fix security in Emuhaya, but nothing has been done. They receive reports of how our people are being killed, but they are not responding,” decried Omboko.

Omboko said the security status in Emuhaya now demands deployment of the General Service Unit (GSU) to help flush out criminals killing innocent people.

“I have talked to Inspector General Douglas Kanja and the Security Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to give us more police officers, including GSU, to help flush out the killer criminals. Our security status in Emuhaya is alarming,” Omboko said.

Transfer of police

Omboko also asked the inspector general to help transfer police officers in the area whom he said are sleeping on their job.

The area MP decried that there is a section of police officers who are colluding with criminals terrorising residents in the area.

“I want some of the police officers who are colluding with criminals in the area to be transferred,” Omboko said.

Omboko also decried the whole of Emuhaya sub-county lacking police patrol vehicles.

“Imagine a whole sub-county without a police patrol vehicle. We have police vehicles here in Vihiga County being used by one person as hundreds of residents suffer because of insecurity,” decried Omboko.

Emuhaya residents decried that criminals terrorising them are armed with crude weapons and firearms.
