Ten ways to realise new year resolves

By , January 8, 2020

Every year, people come up with a list of resolutions to help them step into the lives they always dreamt of, but they usually remain just that, a list. But as NAILANTEI NORARI writes, there are approaches to help you stay on course towards achieving this year’s objectives

Invest in yourself

Rome was not built in a day or by a single man. Similarly, you will need to hone your skills and make yourself indispensable in your area of expertise.

Investing in you is one sound investment that can never depreciate. Learn the soft skills you need, get that Masters and take care of your health. Work on yourself and watch yourself flourish.

Identify strengths and weaknesses

You need to be self-aware to determine the areas that need work and improvement. Be ready to listen to criticism and use it to improve yourself and discard opinions you may not need.

Seek to grow your strengths and to highlight them as you consistently seek to reduce and eventually eliminate your Achilles Heel.

Check your habits

Habits are the tapestry that our lives are woven on and our character is the sum total of our habits.

You can keep a journal to help you identify what you do on daily basis and to also help introduce new and more productive habits.

Seek to be better by incorporating new habits into your life. It could be anything such as yoga, taking more water, avoiding negative self-talk and exercising.

Love your work

Learn to love and enjoy what you do. Learn to be grateful for it, pour yourself into it and do it to the best of your ability.

Even while looking for new opportunities, ensure you do not neglect your current job, as it is all a ladder, with one rung invariably linked to the other. Remember if you truly love what you do, you will never have to work a day.

Face your fears

Many of us are debilitated by the fear of failure or rejection. Learn to do it while scared, heart aflutter and with limbs trembling.

Learn to believe in yourself and not to reject your ideas even before presenting them to the world.

You miss all the shots you do not take. Let this be the year you take all the shots no matter how far off the target they might be.

Take care of yourself

You cannot pour out to others if you are on empty. Ensure that even as you run towards your financial goals, you make stops to refuel and thank yourself.

Exercise, go for massages, have quality quiet time, nurture relationships that embolden you and make you feel invincible, take time off to travel or just stay in the house and unwind, then get back onto the track and keep sprinting and crushing those resolutions.

Keep right company

Look at your coterie of friends and their habits and know that you are very much like them.

Evaluate what you want in life, where you want to go and get friends who would help you achieve that.

You cannot have a new year resolution to quit drinking, yet have the same group of friends who drink like fish.

Do not be afraid to cut off friends who drag you behind and to reach out for like-minded beings to spur you forward.

Get a mentor

In the area you want to grow and better yourself at, find yourself a mentor. It has to be someone who’s been there before you and is willing to hold your hand and walk you the ropes.

This could be a fitness instructor to walk with you in your fitness journey, an executive in the field you are in or even a spiritual leader to help you nurture your spirituality.

Grab every chance

Humans have a way of rationalising the way to great opportunities; ‘I am not ready’, ‘I don’t have a degree’, ‘I am not that good’, ‘I am not worthy’.

Stop opting out of opportunities and instead go for each and every one of them and let the universe decide.

Remember to also work hard and smart at maximising the chances of landing that gig once the opportunity comes your way.

Stop procrastinating

Life is finite, so stop working and living like you will be here forever. Do the things that set your heart ablaze.

Say no to laziness, work tirelessly and take a shot at the things that matter to you, as you’ll only be here for a short while.

Do not take anything for granted including your health and relationships. There is no time to be afraid. Go do it now, as tomorrow is not guaranteed.
