Teenager who beat up police charged with robbery with violence
The teenager who beat up a traffic police officer was presented in court on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.
The teen identified as Ian Njoroge was captured on video beating up a police officer, who has since been identified as Corporal Jacob Ogendo, in Kasarani’s Kamiti Road.
He would later be arrested and presented at the Milimani Law Courts to be charged.
Traffic charges
In the charge sheet, Njoroge was charged with causing obstruction contrary to section 53(1) as read with section 53(4) of the Traffic Act cap 403 of laws of Kenya.
Police statements note that Njoroge caused obstruction along Kamiti Road near Mirema junction when he made a U-turn, thereby obstructing other motorists using the road.
Njoroge was also charged with carrying excess passengers contrary to section 100(2) of the Traffic Act Cap 403 of the laws of Kenya.
Police further indicate that Njoroge was carrying five passengers in the Nissan note he was driving instead of four and there was one excess passenger in the said vehicle.
The third charge was disobeying verbal directives given by a police officer in uniform contrary to section 52(1)(a) as read with section 52(2) of the Traffic Act 403 laws of Kenya.
To support this charge, police revealed that Njoroge did fail to obey directives by Officer Ogendo to drive to Kasarani police station but instead put his car on ‘parking’ instead of ‘drive.’
Additional charges
Similarly, Njoroge was charged with robbery with violence contrary to section 296(2) of the penal code of Kenya.
Police argued that at the time of the incident, Njoroge robbed Ogendo of a battery of a police communication gadget and a mobile phone model Samsung Galaxy Note 1 worth approximately Ksh50,000.
They also noted that Njoroge, in the company of others not arraigned at the Milimani law courts, wounded the police officer.
Njoroge was also charged with causing grievous harm contrary to section 234 of the penal code.
The other charge Njoroge faced at the Milimani Law Courts was resisting arrest contrary to section 253(b) of the penal code.
In the court, police officers clashed with Njoroge’s lawyer before calm was restored.
