Tanzania’s third President Benjamin Mkapa dies
Tanzania’s former President Benjamin Mkapa has died. Mkapa who ruled from 1995 to 2005 died early morning on Friday, according to Tanzania’s State House.
President John Magufuli of Tanzania said on Friday morning that Mkapa died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Dar es Salaam.
Magufuli declared seven days of mourning in the country and asked Tanzanians to remain calm.
Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta sent his condolence message to Tanzania, praising Mkapa as an outstanding leader in the unity of the East African region.
“In his message of comfort, the President mourned the departed Tanzanian leader as an outstanding East African who worked tirelessly for the integration, peace, and progress of the region,” tweeted the State House Kenya.
