Suspected militants attack building site, set ablaze trucks
Suspected Al Shabaab militants have set ablaze eight trucks belonging to a Chinese construction company along the Lamu-Garissa highway at Baragoni Bodhei area in Lamu county.
The attack comes barely a day after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) issued an alert over an impending attack targeting on the Lamu Port and the Lapsset Corridor.
Intelligence reports indicate that security agencies were on high alert following reports that Al Shabaab militants were targeting the Lamu Port and road construction. Although detectives were aware of the intelligence report about the pending attack, they were unable to respond on time and arrest any suspects.
Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia (pictured) said that the suspected militants are believed to have detonated explosives in the parking lot of the vehicles during the Sunday morning attack.
Macharia noted that no casualties have been reported following the attack by the heavily armed militants who began by firing at the vehicles before detonating Improvised Electronic Devices (IEDS).
“We are yet to arrest anybody in connection to the latest attack however, we are following crucial leads to bring to book those behind the latest attack. I urge residents to report and work closely with police in establishing the identity of the suspects,” said Macharia.
