An academic tour turned tragic yesterday after a Form One student drowned while rescuing a college trainee  in Lake Baringo.

The deceased, Allan Limo, a student at Lake Baringo Secondary School, was rescuing Olessos Training Institute student from Uasin Gishu county, who had slipped into the deep waters during the 2pm incident.

Governor Benjamin Cheboi yesterday raised concern over increased cases of deaths on the lake.

He urged Kenya Coast Guard Service to fast-track the deployment of their officers to assist in rescue operations to avert loss of lives at the lake.

“I also request our communities living along the shores of our lakes or those utilising our rivers to exercise caution so as to avoid loss of life. On my behalf and that of the people of Baringo, I take this opportunity to condole with the family, relatives and the school of the deceased,” Governor Cheboi said.

Police have cautioned institutions and other people touring the lake to ensure they have a tour guide to avert more disasters.
