A university student died while 31 of his colleagues and staff were wounded when their bus was involved in an accident at Josa area in Wundanyi-Mwatate road Friday.

Mwatate sub-county police commander Monica Kimani said the Voi-bound Taita Taveta University bus had 29 students and three staff members on board when it overturned and rolled down a cliff at Josa.

“One student died on the spot and several others were injured,” she said.

The university Vice Chancellor Fred Simiyu Barasa said of the 31 injured, 15 were hospitalised while 12 were treated and discharged.

“Fifteen have been hospitalised at St Joseph Shelter of Hope Hospital and Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi, while 12 were treated at Mwatate Sub-County Hospital and Kambira Punda Hospital and discharged,” he said.

The VC said the bus was ferrying First Year students from the School of Agriculture, Earth and Environmental Science.

“The families of those affected have been notified,” he said.

Early last year, an almost similar accident occurred at the same spot after a bus ferrying mourners from a burial ceremony in Mghambonyi area, Wundanyi sub-county, overturned killing one person on the spot and leaving 21 others injured.
