State warns school bus drivers over flouting rules

The government has cautioned school bus drivers against flouting traffic rules amid a surge of road indiscipline cases by some school drivers.

Government Spokesperson, Col (Rtd) Cyrus Oguna revealed that they had received numerous reports on drivers endangering the lives of students by ignoring traffic regulations.

Speaking in Gilgil yesterday, Oguna said the government had taken note of the trend warning school managers of dire consequences should a driver be found in such cases.

Oguna said it was unfortunate that school bus drivers were driving the vehicles like Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) in estates and highways warning that the same must stop. 

“I want to appeal to schools’ administrations in the country to raid their drivers, we are asking them to take this matter seriously, these young lives are precious,” said Oguna.

Evade identification

Rift Valley regional traffic enforcement officer Dorothy Mboya warned politicians against carrying excess passengers with some even concealing their number plates to evade identification once something happens.

“There are a lot of unnecessary obstructions by politicians, make sure you find spaces where you can campaign to avoid causing accidents. You are also not allowed to have a drunk driver,” she said.

This comes even as a new national initiative to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries was launched to strengthen laws, policies and actions aimed at saving lives.

The initiative was launched by the Ministry of Health, National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Bloomberg Philanthropies, a US non-profit organisation.
