Starlets out to finish a tough assignment against Ghana
Kenya’s national women’s football team, Harambee Starlets, host Ghana’s Black Queens today at the Moi International Stadium Kasarani with a fourth-round Olympics Qualifiers slot at stake.
Starlets played to a barren draw against the visitors away in Accra on Friday night and go into today’s return match confident of picking a win in order to proceed to the penultimate round of the Olympics qualifier.
The David Ouma-coached side went into the first leg carrying the underdog tag and it worked in their favour as they managed to contain the highest-ranked side.
“The job is halfway done and we look to finish it off at home. We played defensively away, especially in the first half and were able to contain Ghana in their own turf.
The minimal chances we got have given them a good mentality coming into Tuesday’s match,” said Ouma.
He added: “We got to know their strengths and weaknesses and we will maximise on that, in addition to home ground advantage we keen on winning the match and proceed to the next round of the campaign.”
Ouma believes that their approach in today’s match will move from defensive display to a full out the attack in search of goals.
He argues that the away result has given the players morale and belief that they can knock out the Ghanaians, especially after learning their opponent.
On her part, team captain Dorcas Shikobe exuded confidence in the team picking an outright win at Kasarani even as they look to proceed to the next round where they would meet the winner between Zambia and Botswana.
“We had a good match away. Everyone played as per the coach’s instructions and we were happy for the draw as it made things a bit easy for us in preparing for the return leg.
We are going for an outright win in regular time but in case it comes down to penalties, we have trained for that too,” said Shikobe.
Her sentiments were echoed by Thika Queens’ striker Mwanahalima Adam who will lead the goal hunt today for starlets.
“We expect a tough match in the return match but we are prepared to fight for that win. All the players are motivated by the prospect of featuring in the Olympics and are ready to give the qualifies their all,” said Adam.
