Starlets face South Sudan

By , May 12, 2021

The national women’s football team Harambee Starlets have been placed in Group A for the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations qualifiers in a draw held at CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, on Monday.

In the first round, Kenya will face off against what appears to be modest opposition in South Sudan as Uganda takes on Ethiopia.

In other preliminary fixtures, Eritrea will confront Burundi with Djibouti up against Rwanda.

Should Starlets proceed past South Sudan, they are set to face either Uganda or Ethiopia in the second round.

The winners on aggregate will qualify to join hosts Morocco in the regional showpiece.

The first and second leg fixtures of the first round will be played between June 7 and June 15 with the second round’s first and second leg fixtures taking place between October 18 and October 29, 2021.

Meanwhile, the Kenya U20 women team has also been pooled in Group A alongside Uganda, Burundi, Malawi, Namibia, Angola, Botswana, and Zambia, in the second round of the 2022 Fifa U20 Women World Cup qualifiers.

Only two African representatives will grace the event in Costa Rica.

The women’s U20 continental showpiece first leg fixtures will take place between January 13, and January 15, 2022, with the second leg fixtures to be held between January 27, and January 29, 2022.

In a related development, Kenya has been drawn against Equatorial Guinea in the qualifiers of the Fifa Under-17 women World Cup to be held in India in 2022.

The first leg will be held between January 13-15, 2022 with the second penciled for between January 27-29.

The winner of the Kenya versus Equatorial Guinea match will face South Africa, a beneficiary of bye, in the second round.
