Sleeping giants wake up in 2023 exams

There were frenzied celebrations in several secondary schools in Kakamega County after their candidates posted good results in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.


Teachers, students, parents and members of respective communities gathered at the institutions and broke into song and dance after results showed that their students had performed well.


The celebrations rocked St Ignatius Mukumu Boys, Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls, St Peter’s Seminary-Mukumu, St Peter’s Mumias Boys, Musingu Boys, Eregi Girls and Kakamega High.


More than ten students scored Plain As at Mukumu Girls and five at the neighbouring Mukumu Boys while results continued to stream in.


The Principals attributed the results to hard work and close working relationships between teachers and parents.


“Our results so far indicate that we have greatly improved compared to the previous years despite a health scare that we suffered last year. I am, therefore, very happy,” said Sister Jane Mmbone of Mukumu Girls.


At St. Peter’s Mumias, the top student scored an A Plain, 36 had A minus, 72 B Plus, 155 B Plain, 175 B minus, 76 C Plus, 12 C Plain while one scored an C minus.


Other little-known schools in the county were also basking in glory after their students posted sterling performances in the examinations.


They included St John the Baptist Likuyani Boys whose top student, Lumbaya Kelvin Aswani, scored an A plain of 81 points.


So were St Augustine Milimani and St Cecilia Mautuma whose three and two top students, respectively, had A minus.


Nearly all the students placed on NG-CDF scholarships in Khwisero constituency also recorded sterling performances that will enable them join the university.


Jubilant students


Area MP Christopher Aseka said the NG-CDF scholarships, alongside those under Aseka Miradi Foundation, had immensely contributed to improved performance in the KCSE exams.


“Our learners have done us proud as a majority have scored C plus and above. We have many As and A-. We shall pick another batch of 257 this year to give us similar and even better results in the next four years,” he added.


Celebrations erupted at Bunyore Girls High School after it emerged top in Vihiga county in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination released on Monday.


The school managed to post eight straight As and with 390 out of the 407 candidates who sat the exam at the once famed academic giant scoring C plus and above to earn them university slots.


An overjoyed Bunyore Girls High School Chief Principal Judith Agade who was mobbed by jubilant students and teachers’ moments after the release of the exams, said the candidates had made her proud after many years of under-achievement.


Katrina Nelima led the pack with straight A of 83 points.


Agade added that the school also improved on its mean score after it posted a mean of 9.1, up from a mean of 8.8 points beating their perennial rivals in the county, Chavakali Boys High School.


“We are very grateful to our last year KCSE candidates for giving us eight straight As, breaking the academic record of the school since its inception. We have eight straight As and over 360 candidates who scored C plus and above,” said Agade.


Celebrations were also witnessed at Chavakali Boys, Nyang’ori Boys, Emusire, Hobunaka, Vihiga Boys and Keveye Girls.


Traditional giant schools in Nyanza region continued their dominance in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations released on Monday by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.


In Siaya county, Maranda High school in Bondo sub-county maintained its good performance in the exams.


The school recorded an impressive result in the 2023 KCSE exams, with a mean score of 9.1465 points B plain.


Exemplary performance


Rang’ala Girls High School also registered an exemplary performance in the exams. Out of 675 who sat exams in the school, 661 scored C plus and above.


It had one candidate who got A plain, 55 with A minus, 203 scored B plus, 225 students had B plain, 131 scored B minus, 46 learners got C plus, 8 got C plain while three candidates scored C minus.


School Chief Principal Susan Akoth said the school recorded a mean score of 9.08 a positive deviation of 0.865, an exemplary performance. In 2022, the school had a mean score of 8.215. A total of 508 candidates sat exams.


Akoth said the good performance was as a result of dedicated teachers, students and support from the parents who saw them perform well in the exams.


She said the candidates were very disciplined and committed to their studies.


“We are very happy with the results and expect better results in the future. Our school is spiritually oriented, we put God first,” Akoth said.


Further, she praised the board of management and other stakeholders for the peace they have accorded the school.
