Grain farmers to benefit from new warehouse receipt system

The government is set to embark on the warehouse receipt system beginning early December.
The move will see farmers improve their livelihoods.
Warehouse Receipt System Chairperson Jane Ngige on Friday disclosed that the system which had faced delays will be operationalized in a more professional way that will help reduce pressure they have for years undergone after harvesting of their crops.
She spoke in Sirwo in Cherangany during a sensitization workshop for farmers on the warehouse receipt system.
“Under the Warehouse Receipt System (WRS) owners of various commodities among them maize farmers and other dealers will be able to deposit their products in certified warehouses registered by county government.
“They will be issued with a title document called a Warehouse Receipt as proof of ownership after supervision and verification from the Agriculture and Food Authority after inspection,” she said.
She said the system will enable farmers to access credit as they wait for favorable prices; they can use the receipt as collateral.
