Some 8,300 children are set to get Sh800 monthly stipend in a pilot programme the government recently launched in collaboration with the United Nations to alleviate poverty.

The programme, started under the Universal Child Benefit (UCB), is being conducted in Kajiado, Embu and Kisumu counties by the State Department of Social Protection in conjunction with Unicef, World Food Programme and Save the Children.

It is being conducted in Kajiado Township, Ildamat in Kajiado Central, Thura in Mbeere North, Embu County as well Kachogo and Kakola in Nyando. Assistant Director of Children Service Peter Ombasa said: “One in four Kenyans is stunted. If you’re stunted in your first 1,000 days, you’re done”.
