Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala says the ongoing Sh460 million Mama Ngina waterfront project will be ready before Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20.

Balala said the project’s progress is 90 per cent complete with the remaining 10 per cent attributable to the construction of a presidential square.

He said a precursor festival to curtain-raise the official launch of the project would be held on September 2.

Inclusion of the presidential square with focus on the Mashujaa Day fete resulted into the elaborate re-designing meant to include additional details in the project has partly caused the “slight delays” in the project,” he said.

“So far I can say I am satisfied with the ongoing project. We are being perceived to be behind schedule because we included other details like the presidential square, which required re-designing. Otherwise, the rest of the project is running as planned,” Balala said after inspecting the project on Friday.

He said the historical culture of the local Swahili community would be preserved to attract visitors from the world over.

The CS disclosed that the government is mooting plans to give the historic Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach a face-lift.
